First steps on preparing new wood for paint

I've been working on the entertainment center I my spare time, it is going to be a time consuming process, but one I love doing.

First thing I had to do was to fill all the nail holes

There were many

After the nail holes dried, I sanded the whole thing down, inside and out. With the exception of two old doors, the whole thing was built with new wood so I needed to soften the edges

Then I had to vacuum the whole thing down, inside and out.

Next step was to cover all the knot holes with Kilz primer, so they don't bleed through all of the layers of paint that's going on this thing.

I'm going to put three coats of primer on the knots just to make sure there is no bleed through.

So far so good!

  1. Lots of prep work. I love the piece itself. Can't wait to see how you finish it!

    1. Thanks Kim, yeah there's always a lot of prep work on these raw wood pieces. I have to try to emulate the texture that's on the old doors, they have a rough texture from old varnish and paint. I love doing this kind of work though, it's been awhile and I'm missing it.

I would love to hear from my readers, I need input so I can post things that interest you. Questions encouraged:)
