Finally going home

We are finally going home after being gone for 16 long, emotionally draining days. We left for Iowa after getting a call that my father-in-law was ill, as soon as we got there we learned that he had terminal cancer and lost him just 11 days later. During that time we got the news that I lost an aunt and my stepfather within 32 hours of each other, so we lost three loved ones and had three funeral services, all in 16 days.

We are exhausted, emotionally and mentally, but we are eternally grateful for good friends who welcomed us into their home......for 16 days. Not only did they give us a comfortable place to stay, but when my two brother-in-laws arrived, they put them up as well.

We were thankful to have a "home" base to come back to every night, and a comfortable bed to sleep in.

Morning coffee and long talks on their wonderful porch in the morning, before the cold and rain weather moved in. They don't know how invaluable those talks were, it kept our minds occupied, and off of the tough days ahead.

It would have been hard to come back to a cold, lonely motel room every night after our heart wrenching visits with Pappy.  I know we couldn't have gotten through this very difficult time without them, their generosity was above and beyond.

You don't find friends like that everyday, we are blessed beyond measure:)
And I thank them with all my heart.

  1. Rhonda ~ I'm so sorry for your losses. Such a difficult time for you and your family. It sounds like you have some truly wonderful friends. Those are the kind to treasure and I can tell that you do. I'm sure it feels good to be home and try to get back to some sort of normal. Just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you.

    1. Thank you so much JoAnne, yes, it has been rough the last couple of weeks, but our friends certainly lightened our burden. We moved away from them 20 years ago, but the miles have not come between us. Our two daughters made it back for their Pappy's funeral too and stayed with their friend from school:) Thank you so much for your nice comment, everyone's kind words have made it easier to bare.
