Spending money where it counts in decorating!

Well, I have been working feverishly on my own projects all week and have been getting a lot of "to do's" crossed off my list. I have to get these projects finished because we are going to pick up the entertainment unit tomorrow and I will be spending some time painting that.

This entertainment unit cost more than what I am used to spending on furniture.........a lot more. Like $1,200.00 more! I know, I know this is a blog about being frugal!  But, it's a great addition to our home, it will be well utilized and it will be another focal point in our great room. There is tons of storage in it so will come in handy for dvd's, games, and books.

I am frugal........but I'm not a cheapskate. You read my posts and see that I go to flea markets and junk shops for most of my furniture and decorating items, that has always been a passion of mine and it's not going to change. But sometimes it's necessary to spend a more money on that one piece that you fall in love with and that makes a HUGE statement in your house.

Our home has a large great room with cathedral ceilings and when we moved here 6 years ago we came from a home of about 1,200 square feet and a lot of little pieces of furniture. This home is 2,000 sq. ft. and needless to say, when we put our furniture in place in this great room, my furniture shrunk even more. I had been looking for a large entertainment unit for some time, something massive to sit along that huge wall, instead of the 3 small pieces that are currently there. Actually, this unit is 3 pieces but it's put together as one. I had pretty much given up because I couldn't find anything that I liked. I wanted this huge piece of furniture to be unique and one of a kind, because that's the way I am......... it can be frustrating. Those pieces are pretty hard to come by, especially in a reasonable price range, and believe me, I searched and searched and once again my patience paid off!

Every room needs a focal point, whether it's a huge mirror above a piece of furniture or a large clock, or even just a a great piece of furniture that you paint in an awesome bright color. Something to draw your eye in, so why not let that piece say something about your own personal style. That's why I love one-of-a-kind pieces, it says a lot about my style and my character. Besides being passionate about saving money at flea markets and junk shops I also shop there because I want my home to express who I am. If I can't find a unique piece, I can find something that I can put my signature on to make them my own.

So, it's OK to spend some money on a great statement piece. You can save money other places to make up for it! Make your home one that you love to come home to at the end of the day! My home is my sanctuary!!
