Unfinished Furniture stores offer tons of options!
In my blog I will always talk about decorating with things that I have found at flea markets, etc. because that is what I do. But from time to time I will give you ideas on where you can get beautiful furniture or decorations for less money when I find them, for those of you who don't have the time or the opportunities to search flea markets and thrift stores. I am very fortunate that we have a wonderful flea market close by and I go as much as I can in the summer. I am also very lucky to have a lot of thrift stores in my area. But for those of you who don't have that option or don't care to buy used furniture, I urge you to visit an unfinished furniture store, there may be one near you. Before I knew about the flea market and the thrift stores that abound out here I worked at a wonderful unfinished furniture store called the Wayside Workshop! I learned so much about wood furniture while I worked there and that is also when I started experimenting with painting furniture! I loved the fact that I could finish it myself in my decorative painting styles! One of the main reasons I love buying old furniture is because it is unique and you can tell what type of wood it is made of. Now, when you shop in a traditional furniture store for that beautiful cherry wood table and chairs set, you are not getting a "cherry" wood table and chairs set. What your getting is a cheaper hardwood table finished with a cherry stain. Now there is nothing wrong with that except that you may be paying the price of cherry and what you are getting is "rubber wood"! When you shop in an unfinished furniture store you see the furniture that you are getting before the finish goes on. And when you are in the market for that cherry wood furniture set, that is exactly what you are getting, a table and chairs made from genuine cherry wood. The Wayside Workshop carries furniture in several types of wood and you can mix and match tables and chair styles which is a great plus also. They also offered to finish your furniture for you if you aren't that adventureous! Whether you paint it yourself or have it finished for you, it is always a custom piece made just for you! When you are visiting an unfinished furniture store, check with them to see if they offer to finish it for you. The Wayside Workshop did beautiful finish work and had a great selection of stain colors to choose from and several options for the final finish coat. I purchased this computer desk, printing stand, chair and corner table because I needed a set that had a keyboard pullout and I fell in love with it! I finished this myself in a black stain that they offered for sale. Also, the cherry wood entertainment center you see here in the corner of this Christmas photo is a custom piece that was built by the furniture builders at Wayside. So, check to see if you are close to an unfinished furniture store and pay it a visit. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the options and the prices! If you live in the Cleveland/Akron, Ohio area you can visit the Wayside Workshop which is located in Aurora, Ohio in the Aurora Farms Outlet Mall. You can see that the Wayside Workshop is a link on my website. Gor for a visit now at www.waysideworkshop.com!
